July 2015 - December 2015
Snapchat is an American multimedia messaging application. One of the principal features of Snapchat is that pictures and messages are usually only available briefly before they become inaccessible to their recipients.
A Snapchat Geofilter is a location-restricted visual effect that Snapchat users can add to photos or videos they take through the app. The filter's location restrictions mean that all filters are only available to people within a certain radius of a given location.
In mid-2015, Snapchat announced they would accept submissions for Snapchat geofilter designs.
I set out to design a meaningful Snapchat geofilter that the people of Melbourne would be proud to use. My goal was to create a geofilter for a prominent public place that the community loved. If successful, this geofilter would provide free publicity for my brand and give me an easy way to get noticed by the public.
I undertook this project independently to enhance my skills, beginning with research, creating concepts, ideation (sketches), moving to illustration, and ending with final prototypes.
I subsequently created a series of Melbourne designs, each more intricate and detailed than the last. After hours of deliberation, I chose only to submit my favourite design - a yellow-illustrated Melbourne cityscape that included its iconic landmarks.
I was elated when Snapchat chose my design (yellow-illustrated Melbourne cityscape) as an official geofilter for the city of Melbourne. I was filled with pride and joy, knowing that my design was being shared and celebrated by people around the city.
It's recorded to have been used by over 50,000 people in Melbourne since its release in 2015 and has since become increasingly popular with locals and visitors alike.
This was a huge honour for me to have my work featured on such a widely-used platform, and I am proud to have been part of creating a fun and unique way to share memories.
